#352. He’s at least making an effort

January 27, 1999

WINSTON: Well, Jay, at least he's making an effort...
JAY: To do WHAT, Winston? To assume things about my interests cuz I'm BLACK?

WINSTON: Well, at least he means well. His heart's in the right place...
JAY: I dunno, maybe you're right. Maybe I'm overreacting.

SOUND: Knock! Knock!
JAY: I'll get it...

BEN: Merry belated Kwanzaa!!
JAY: AAAAAA!!

#353. Winston’s a double major

January 28, 1999

WINSTON: Hey Johnny, I didn't know you took philosophy of religion.
JOHNNY: Hey Winston, yeah, general requirements. How 'bout you?

WINSTON: I'm a philosophy/history double major.
JOHNNY: Really? Cool.

WINSTON: Yes, Johnny, just becaues I'm BLACK doesn't mean I have an easy schedule.

JOHNNY: Yes... because... I obviously... IMPLIED that... somehow.
WINSTON: Oh... you THOUGHT ABOUT implying it...

#354. White philosophers

January 29, 1999

WINSTON: Well, here we go again. Another class where we only learn about WHITE people.
JOHNNY: Oh, come ON, Winston. It just HAPPENS that most of the really famous philosophers were WHITE.

WINSTON: They're only FAMOUS because they're the ones who are taught every year! If you systematically ignore someone, they won't gain much ACCEPTANCE, will they?
JOHNNY: YEAH?! WELL, that's a good POINT!!

JOHNNY: That wasn't the STRONG comeback I'd hoped it would be....
WINSTON: Oh, no, it was CRUSHING. My back's against the wall...

#355. Equating white with normal

February 1, 1999

WINSTON: You have to step back from our campus and take a good look at it.

WINSTON: There's tons of examples where "white" is equated with normal. It makes everyone else "non-white", ABnormal, deviant.

WINSTON: There's "black" history" and history. "Black" frats and frats/ When race isn't specified, white is assumed. It's subtle, it's everywhere.

WINSTON: Take the DAMN cartoon in the Chronicle!
JOHNNY: Well, there's a whole WORLD of problems with that thing. It's so damn preachy...

#356. Stereotypes are harmful

February 2, 1999

NARRATOR: At this week's "Johnny" cast party.
JOHNNY: Well, Winston, Jay, it's great to have you guys aboard.
WINSTON: It's gonna be fun, Johnny.

JOHNNY: You know, the last two weeks have been interesting, we've ALL learned something. Do you think there's a moral we could take from all this?

WINSTON: Well, I'd say it's that, in any form, STEREOTYPES ARE HARMFUL.
BEN: Ain't THAT the truth.

BEN: Isn't that right, Fratman and Sorority Girl?
SORORITY GIRL: Teehee! I'm shallow!
FRATMAN: I'm drunk AND shallow!
LABEL: Look kids! Irony!
